3/7/25 Dirty Laundry

Not sure what this says about us, or the “larger us”, but we found the other white people visiting Mumbai. The observation deck over the largest outdoor laundry facility in the world, Dhobi Ghat, had 1000% more white foreigners than the entirety of this trip so far.

Irregardless, the facility was truly astounding. Thousands of pounds (kilograms!) of laundry strung up in multiple tiers, organized by color and type. Each basin of water contained a stone slab wash board and the drying racks were ropes twisted to hold the fabric without the need for clothes pins in the same way eyebrow threading grabs each hair. I was mesmerized watching the blue dye runoff from a large metal vat melding into the small stream of water that ran throughout the space and by the vastness of the operation.
